Hurix Digital Delivers 29,000 WCAG 2.1 AA-Compliant PDFs for Education & Healthcare Sectors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India – Hurix Digital, a leader in digital content and technology solutions, successfully executed an ambitious accessibility project. In less than four months, we delivered 29,000 PDFs compliant with WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 standards, spanning the education and healthcare sectors. This project ensured that users with disabilities could access information essential to their lives while also improving overall accessibility at scale.

The project was bold and presented the client with the challenge of converting an immense collection of unstructured PDFs, 25,000 educational pages worth of content, and 4,000 healthcare documents, which was congruent with assistive technology. Many issues in the content needed to be addressed in order to render them compliant, including incorrect order of reading, incorrect tagging, missing descriptions for images, nested lists, inconsistencies with language in Spanish and French, etc. All issues required to be rectified to render compliant using CommonLook, Adobe Accessibility Check, and PAC3, among others.

In order to have a comprehensive and effective process, Hurix Digital used a layered approach. As a first step, we did an analysis that revealed structural and tagging issues and undertook manual steps to fix the reading sequence logic and nested elements. Also, for images, we used AI-based tools to create alt text that was active and meaningful, such as EqualSense. After the content was converted, we would run extensive validation each day to ensure compliance with accessibility. Throughout the project, we maintained close communication with the client to keep them informed during the project lifecycle.

The methodology resulted in about 29,000 fully accessible PDFs compliant with both WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508. The content now accepts a screen reader, is correctly tagged for navigation, and caters to multilingual audiences. This indeed is an illustrative case of Hurix Digital’s stringent process involving AI, manual remediation, and continuous quality checks to ensure accessibility on a large scale.

Gokulnath Balasubramanian, Vice President – Content Transformation, Hurix Digital, commented on this huge success, “Achieving compliance across tens of thousands of documents is no small feat. This project underscores our capability to deliver scalable, high-quality accessibility solutions that open access to vital information.”
