About the Client
A globally recognized children’s publishing and education organization with a century-long legacy and a presence across numerous countries. The organization delivers books, digital reading platforms, and classroom resources that support literacy development, independent reading, and lifelong learning. Through partnerships with schools, educators, and families, the organization provides book clubs, book fairs, and digital learning tools designed to engage young readers and promote equitable access to educational content.
Challenges They Faced
The organization sought to enhance the accessibility of its eBook reader platform to ensure an inclusive experience for all users, including individuals with disabilities. Several challenges emerged during the accessibility evaluation initiative:
- Extensive Interface Coverage – A large number of teacher, student, and onboarding screens required thorough manual accessibility testing.
- Alignment with Updated Accessibility Standards – Compliance with WCAG 2.2 AA introduced new success criteria related to interaction design, focus management, and cognitive accessibility.
- Assistive Technology Testing Requirements – Detailed testing using screen readers and keyboard navigation was necessary to replicate real-world user experiences for individuals with visual and motor impairments.
- Custom and Dynamic UI Components – Interactive elements and custom-built components required in-depth validation for keyboard accessibility, focus behavior, and ARIA compliance.
- Limited Documentation – The absence of detailed accessibility and UX documentation required exploratory testing to fully understand interface functionality and user flows.
Solutions We Offered
A structured, comprehensive accessibility audit approach was implemented to evaluate usability, ensure compliance, and provide actionable remediation guidance.
- Comprehensive Manual Testing – All platform screens were tested using screen readers and keyboard-only navigation to evaluate real user experiences across assistive technologies.
- Screen-Level Accessibility Audits – Each interface was reviewed individually to assess structure, navigation, interactivity, and content accessibility across teacher, student, and onboarding modules.
- WCAG 2.2 AA Compliance Mapping – Identified issues were mapped to specific WCAG success criteria, ensuring traceability and enabling development teams to prioritize remediation efforts effectively.
- Detailed Accessibility Reporting – Comprehensive reports were delivered for each screen, including issue descriptions, severity classifications, referenced WCAG criteria, remediation recommendations, and assistive technology observations.
- Collaborative Remediation Support – Interactive walkthrough sessions were conducted with design and development teams to clarify findings, address questions, and provide practical guidance for implementing accessibility improvements.
