Frequently Asked Questions

Does WCAG address mobile accessibility?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) deliver an extensive set of standards for digital content. Initially designed for websites, WCAG is the best-practice benchmark for all kinds of online experiences, including mobile apps.

How do I know if my website is WCAG compliant?

To ensure your website is WCAG compliant, you can check it for ADA compliance with a comprehensive audit. A thorough audit assesses every site page for accessibility and compliance utilizing the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). WCAG contains a huge checklist that specifies all the compliance terms and is the foundation for website compliance.

Who needs to be WCAG compliant?

According to section 508, every online website operated by national institutes or companies that obtain federal allocation must remain accessible to all its users. In addition, under updated WCAG compliance rules, these sites must comply with the WCAG 2.0 Level AA.

What is WCAG?

WCAG, also known as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, defines how to create website content that is more accessible to individuals with disabilities and individuals with changing capabilities due to aging. In addition, WCAG delivers a standard explanation for available content and a specified benchmark.

Is WCAG available in other languages?

WCAG is available in multiple languages, including the following:

– Arabic

– Català (Catalan)

– Čeština (Czech)

– Eesti (Estonian)

– Suomi (Finnish)

– Dansk (Danish)

– Ελληνικά (Greek)

– Español (Spanish)

– Français (French)

– 日本語 (Japanese)

– עברית (Hebrew)

– Magyar (Hungarian)

– Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian)

– Italiano (Italian)

– 한국어 (Korean)

– Nederlands (Dutch)

– Norsk (Norwegian)

– Polski (Polish)

– Português Europeu (European Portuguese)

– Português Do Brasil (Brazilian Portuguese)

– Русский Язык (Russian)

– Svenska (Swedish)

– 简体中文 (Simplified Chinese)

What is Section 508, and why is it important?

Section 508 is a primary component of an amendment to the Rehabilitation Act 1973. It directs all national electronic content to remain accessible to all its users. The United States Access Board is an autonomous national agency that creates and sustains benchmarks that must be fulfilled to accomplish 508 compliance.

What is the difference between 508 and WCAG?

Although many individuals think section 508 and WCAG are the same, the two have many differences. While section 508 is a United States national law, WCAG is a collection of procedures identified worldwide.

In addition, the Access Board published a final rule that revised accessibility provisions comprising Section 508 and restored guidelines for telecommunications standards complying with Section 255 of the Communications Act.

Who needs to be 508 compliant?

Section 508 mandates that the national government create, procure, use and sustain ICT (Information Technology) accessible to individuals with disabilities, regardless of whether or not they work for the national government.

What does it mean to make something 508 compliant?

Section 508 specifies the benchmark that all electronic records are available to everyone, no matter how an individual reads. In simpler terms, electronic documents are only regarded as 508-compliant when assistive technologies can display all users with the same graphical data.

Does Section 508 apply to state and local government EIT procurements?

Section 508 usually does not apply to local and state governments’ EIT procurements. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 exclusively applies to national agencies.

What is accessibility compliant?

Accessibility website compliance extends from the Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Convenient Design. It demands that all electronic data and technology specified on your website be accessible to people with disabilities.

What are the 3 levels of accessibility?

There are generally three compliance levels within WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines): A, AA, and AAA. Each level comprises guidelines that must be fulfilled to consider the website available for all users.

The difference between compliance levels provides website developers with an organized system for good, minimal, and better accessibility. Besides, the different WCAG classes also deliver more flexibility, so even exceptionally complicated websites or state-of-the-art technologies can keep a minimum level of compliance.

Which standards are absolutely essential for accessibility?

Accessibility benchmarks published under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) extend to areas of public accommodation, state and local government facilities, and commercial facilities in new construction, changes, and additions. Furthermore, the ADA measures are based on minimum guidelines specified by the Access Board.

What is an accessibility checklist?

The WCAG accessibility checklist is created by WebAIM and is their understanding of the WCAG 2.0 policies and success benchmarks. Unlike the WCAG 2.0 checklist, the accessibility checklist comprises a wide range of web content and is not technology-specific.

What do I risk if my website is not compliant with ADA?

Given the way the law is composed, maintaining a website that is not available to everyone or failing to comply with ADA policies will be deemed active prejudice. Furthermore, non-compliance implies that you are risking your website and could be penalized if you disregard the requirements of people with disabilities.

Other than avoiding lawsuits, how does my organization benefit from making our website compliant with ADA?

When you comply with ADA, you deliver a better client experience, especially for people with mental and physical disabilities. It further assists in enhancing the company’s reputation and helps in brand recognition through ongoing actions. By being ADA compliant, you can reach hundreds and thousands of users who might not have access to such a website if the accessibility was too challenging for them.
